We got into Amsterdam at about 10:00 without a place to stay. We didn't have a place to stay because we were planning on staying in Brussels. (not to say that we had a place in Brussels either) But, we got to Amsterdam and made some phone calls to local hostels. Within the first five minutes, a guy walked past us and said "watch out," pointing to our bags. Which, might I add, were about three five feet from us as we were using the phone.
So now we are paranoid about our bags, we have no place to stay, and we are in the sketchiest city in world. Alrighty then.
We think we have a place to stay so we start to walk down the main avenue toward our supposed room when a guy comes up to us and offers us a place to stay for a cheap price. Our financial consultant, Dave, jumped on the idea whereas I had no intention of even letting this guy know we speak English. This young guy brings us to his place when another guy comes up to us and offers one of HIS rooms. Well, this is getting ridiculous and I did not want to stay in a room where some guy on the street is offering us good price. We went to the other guys place and Cassidy and Dave coaxed me into staying. . .no, the place looked fine so we did it.
Well, enough about the small details, you all want hear about the Red Light District. This place is unlike anything I have ever seen before. The only thing that I could compare it to is 42nd street in NYC before all of the trash was cleaned out. By request of my mother, I had to get pictures of the women in the windows.
Keep in mind that all pictures of the women are forbidden
so I had to go undercover and get some without a flash.
The pictures are fuzzy but you can get a good idea of what this little district is like. It is without a doubt a tourist trap. There are people from all over looking at these girls, businessmen, grandparents, not many kids but it was something else. If you can imagine, these windows are lit up on both sides of the canal. I took pictures until one of the girl saw the camera and started to yell "NO PHOTO, STOP!!!!!" loud and that was the end of my picture taking. I think her pimp, Raerodd was watching me (by the way, that's a double "D" for a double dose of dis pimpin')
It was about 12 at night and the people all around the Red Light District were either businessmen, tourists or locals. The locals seemed to be very nice. In fact, just about every one of them greeted me. The funny thing is that they all thought my name was "ecstasy" or "coca?" Do I look like those are my names?
The entire city is made up of canals. There are about 10 canals that
encircle the main island. I didn't learn this until after the first night because
most of the first night you're getting over your shock of seeing prostitutes
in windows and seeing marijuana sold at coffee houses.
The first night we walked around the Red Light District
and I was ready to leave the very next day. However, we rented bikes and
decided to give this place a chance during the day. Thank God we did.
